Day Two

DAY TWO

Kurt woke me up an hour early (at 5:45am) after forgetting to turn his cell phone clock back one hour – fortunately I had an early night to start with. After a cooked breakfast we suited up (I had six layers on to Kurt’s three) and walked across the road to the impressive medieval city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Surrounded by ten meter stone walls the city was constructed along the side of the Tauber valley in 1298, making it an intimidating fortress to protect its large population and trading routes crossing the southern region of the Rhine land. Old stone and wood constructed houses, many six stories high, run alongside each other in packed streets – fashion boutiques, bakeries, cafes and hotels now competing for the attention of modern visitors. We walked a circuit around the cities snowy streets, bought fancy chocolates, visited a Lutheran cathedral and sipped cappuccinos in a warm hotel lounge.

Returning to the van a trip into town was called for to remedy our dire bedding crisis and to do a little bit more food shopping. I was very disappointed yesterday with the lack of imagination showed by Frankfurt’s architects, but the wide range of different products found in their super marts helped improve my view of the place. Kurt and I are still finding driving a fairly stressful experience give the van is seven meters long and we’re driving on the wrong side of the road. Back at our parking lot Kurt set up his leopard skin lair (with peachy apricot pillow) while I went for the Zebra loft with white cushion. Lunch and route planning followed with a chilled eve (-1 degree outside) and great coffee.

Editors Note – Glenn just bashed his head for the second time in 2 days, against a cupboard in our spacious home on wheels and it may look like we might lose Glenn to Cranial damage and not the extreme cold as we all expected.

Editors Note cont – In case you were wondering the only blankets we could find were those lovely soft and cuddly African print blankets. We both agreed that I was the leopard and lately Glenn couldn’t decide whether it was Black on White or Visa Versa.
